INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOTHERAPEUTIC OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

Online 2hr 30 mins £30

An online workshop conducted by Dr Lynda Foulder-Hughes.

This dynamic 2½-hour workshop introduces the emerging and increasingly influential field of psychotherapeutic occupational therapy (psychotherapeutic OT) a specialist area of practice for occupational therapists (OTs)

A psychotherapeutic occupational therapist is a regulated therapist (registered with the Health and Care Professions Council HCPC where it is illegal to use the title “Occupational Therapist” without registration) who integrates evidence-based psychotherapy approaches into meaningful, participatory activity. What makes psychotherapeutic OTs unique is that they truly work with the whole person mind, body, identity, relationships, roles, and environment.

Unlike psychotherapy and counselling in the UK, which are largely unregulated titles, occupational therapy is a protected profession. The profession has deep humanistic, person-centred roots and was embedding psychotherapy into practice over 100 years ago. Psychotherapeutic OT is not new but the language to describe this integrated expertise is.

The workshop will discuss why more OTs are needed to help raise standards pf practice within both psychotherapy and counselling and how psychotherapeutic OTs utilise modalities within a holistic framework.

There is no “one size fits all” model. Instead, therapy is embedded within personally meaningful activity. Skills are translated into real-world participation at home, at work, in education, and in relationships. It will also discuss why psychotherapeutic OTs are uniquely placed to work in the specialist field of trauma recovery.

It will discuss how OTs use counselling skills regardless of whether the OT works in physical or mental health settings, with adults or children.

The workshop includes exploration of professional identity and pathways to practice confidently as a psychotherapeutic OT. It will address common misconceptions about OT within psychotherapy communities and highlight exciting developments internationally, including jurisdictions where OTs are recognised as regulated psychotherapy providers.

This session is both inspirational and practical. It invites occupational therapists to rediscover their historical psychotherapy roots and empowers them to confidently articulate and develop their psychotherapeutic skillset.

AN INTRODUCTION TO REMIND THERAPY ® -INTEGRATIVE PSYCHOTHERAPY FOR OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS

Online 1 day £150

An online workshop conducted by Dr Lynda Foulder-Hughes.

This is a one day online workshop for occupational therapists wanting to learn more about how integrative psychotherapy and the REMIND Therapy ® approach can be applied to  psychotherapeutic practice.

This workshop is the ideal foundation for occupational therapists wanting to study for the REMIND Therapy ® - Integrative Psychotherapy diploma course.

It is strongly advised that those wishing to apply for the diploma course attend this workshop prior to applying.

Each of the core concepts of REMIND Therapy ® (routine, exercise, mindfulness, invest in self and others, nature, and diet) and the underpinning psychotherapeutic modalities of REMIND have in themselves a singularly good evidence base in terms of improving mental wellbeing. However, individually, there is not a “one size fits all” approach which works for everyone.

Each person is unique, and so is their experience of trauma and mental health.

This workshop will explore why REMIND Therapy ® can be used in a more holistic, and integrative way within psychotherapeutic settings by providing a framework to  recover and live, which can be utilised flexibly depending upon the person’s needs and experiences.

Some of the evidenced based psychotherapeutic approaches on which REMIND Therapy ® is based will be discussed. For example, humanistic counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), compassion focussed therapy (CFT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), solution focused therapy (SFT), mindfulness, somatic therapy,  metaphysical approaches and transpersonal counselling. The underpinning evidence based in terms of REMIND Therapy ® and how it relates to  psychotherapeutic occupational therapy will be discussed.

At the end of the workshop delegates will be able to describe the core principles of REMIND Therapy ® and why an integrative psychotherapeutic approach is effective within psychotherapeutic occupational therapy practice.

DIPLOMA IN INTEGRATIVE PSYCHOTHERAPY: REMIND Therapy ®

Full Diploma Course - £2000

ELIGIBILITY

This 6 month intensive diploma  course is designed as a post- qualifying practitioner level qualification for qualified occupational therapists, in REMIND Therapy ® - integrative psychotherapy.

It is suitable for occupational therapists who wish to specialise as psychotherapeutic occupational therapists.

Occupational therapists applying for this course must be registered with the HCPC and hold professional indemnity insurance (ie. through their Royal College of Occupational Therapists membership, or via a separate insurance provider).

For those occupational therapists residing and practising outside of the UK, they must follow the regulations in terms of their membership country or governing state.

All applicants to this course must be in supervised practice, or have  supervision in place at the start of the program. Practice settings can be across statutory, voluntary, or independent practice settings. Practice can be either full time or part time.  Applicants must be able to embed 100 hours practice experience into their current occupational therapy setting as part of the REMIND Therapy ® course.

For those who hold recognised occupational therapy qualifications,  who are returning to practice, via the HCPC, are also eligible to apply for this course. This course can be counted towards the HCPC return to practice route, in order to return to the HCPC register as a protected title occupational therapist. Returners must hold professional indemnity insurance (ie. contact RCOT membership directly), have supervision in place, and be able to fulfil 100 hours supervised practice experience as part of the course.  Practice hours should be within either a statutory or independent clinical setting.

All applicants are responsible for finding their own suitable practice placement if they are not in current employment where occupational therapy skills are utilised, and the REMIND Therapy ® approach can be embedded.

SUPERVISION

It is a requirement of the course that you are in supervised practice throughout the duration of the course. Currently, supervision in psychotherapy within the UK for professionals, is set at a minimum of 90 minutes per practice month. However, this is a minimum requirement for both this course and for practice. As a professional, you must be capable of identifying your own supervision needs beyond this minimum level, and seek more supervision where appropriate in terms of client/patient complexity, and work load.

Upon application you must provide details of  your supervisor  for this course. Your supervisor  must agree to supervise you for the duration of your time studying for the diploma, including your 100 hours embedded practice.

Your supervisor will also be required to sign  your supervision log form at the end of the course.

PRACTICE

In order to gain competence and skill, it is a requirement that you should be able to have 100 practice hours where you are able to embed the principles of REMIND Therapy ® in a real-life setting.

For those who are returning to the HCPC register as occupational therapists (whereby days are counted rather than hours) and are using this course as part of  this requirement, 100 hours equates to approximately 15 days practice. However, supervision must be in place throughout this (and for the entire duration of the course over 6 months).

You are responsible for finding your own practice placement if you are unable to embed REMIND Therapy ®- integrative psychotherapy, into your current work  or practice setting.

PERSONAL THERAPY

Many  integrative psychotherapy courses recommend a minimum of between 10-20 hours of personal psychological therapy.

It is not a strict requirement of this course to have personal therapy (counselling/psychotherapy) as those who are attending are already qualified HCPC regulated occupational therapists.

However, as a sensible  measure it is  advisable to have personal therapy in place when studying psychotherapeutic modalities like REMIND Therapy ®.

Having  personal therapy is extremely beneficial. This is especially so, if you have unprocessed trauma or a history of mental health challenges. The content of some of the case studies within this course will deal with highly distressing and at times graphic content (as in real life   psychotherapy and OT practice settings). The case studies will contain examples of trauma, neglect, and abuse (including childhood sexual abuse).

It is therefore, important for you as a professional to acknowledge  how you deal with your own emotional reactions  and vicarious trauma based on your personal and professional history of trauma/ mental health. You must  seek assistance if you find yourself becoming triggered, re-traumatised, distressed or overwhelmed by the course content at any time. You must also address this during supervision and take appropriate steps to seek professional help.
